Half-way between a tapas bar and a stylish restaurant, Bar Mut defies categorization. It’s not among the city’s chicest dining destinations, nor is it just another tapas bar; it’s the perfect happy medium just in-between. That’s because Bar Mut knows how to squeeze in to a sweet spot that very few establishments can pull off. And that makes it a perfect place to mark a special occasion with friends or a special someone, enjoying tapas, small plates, or a proper three-course meal, all within an environment in which no detail has been overlooked, and each one in turn evokes the essence of a classic tavern of the 1930s.
Reveling in this distinctive no-man’s-land of the restaurant world, Bar Mut has carved out its own category in the city, and is already one of the best regarded spots in town: it is Robert de Niro's favorite restaurant in Barcelona. Its owner, restaurateur Kim Díaz, has Entrepanes Díaz right across the street, turning this chaflán into an oasis for sybarites, lovers of good food and drink.
That’s partly in thanks to its expansive menu, featuring everything from tapas to farm-to-table entrées, along with everything in-between. The menu always features seasonal, high quality ingredients, with a special emphasis on fresh seafood, with shrimp from Palamós, cockles from Galicia, or tuna belly when available. Diners can also find classic dishes like egg carpaccio, one of the house specialties, or T-bone steak. Best of all, everything pairs perfectly with one of the 300+ vintages on the wine menu.
With its vast menu and cozy ambience, Bar Mut consistently attracts a diverse crowd, welcoming groups of friends, families, and tourists hip to the best eats in the city. This no-frills establishment is sure to delight the palates of any dining party, as well as their wallets, since the fine dishes here don’t come with exorbitant price tags or gratuitous luxuries.
We made new friends at a cooking class who highly recommended Bar Mut.
We enjoyed outstanding seafood in generous portions. Busy, small account, but lots of positive energy. Waitstaff gauged our budget (most expensive meal we had in BCN) and recommended accordingly.
We tried to get reservation on our own, but couldn't ... fortunately, we were staying at a local high end boutique hotel whose concierge was able to get us 2 spots at the bar on an otherwise sold out night.
