The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, MACBA, is the city’s top spot for viewing works of art produced in the last half of the 20th century.
The building that today houses Museu d'Art Contemporàni de Barcelona was designed by the architect Richard Meier and is located in the city’s Raval neighborhood, just steps away from the Center for Contemporary Culture (CCCB).
Its permanent collection, comprised principally of gifts and artifacts from the Catalan Government, the Barcelona City Hall, and the Contemporary Art Museum Foundation, contains over 1,630 individual works, and tells the story of contemporary art made within Catalonia and in the foreign regions that have been influenced by it.
The MACBA collection shows the evolution of the artistic trends and practices from the beginning of the latter half of the 20th century, and includes works by artists from Catalonia, Spain, and all over the world.
Miquel Barceló, Jean Michel Basquiat, Miguel Ángel Campano and Antoni Tàpies are just some of the innovative artists represented in the MACBA’s permanent collection. The Museum also hosts various temporary exhibitions and organizes conferences, activities, and special events to promote the study and enjoyment of contemporary and avant-garde art.
