Barcelona has an extensive network of markets that deliver nothing short of a full-on extravaganza for the senses, with its range of exciting flavors and aromas.
Since 1991, the Barcelona Municipal Market Institute (IMMB) has overseen the direct management and operation of the city’s municipal markets. Today, those markets number over 40 (4 are not food markets), spread over all 10 municipal districts.
Since their initial establishment, these marketplaces have become essential features of each and every neighborhood, as the market is essentially all about the people and the relationships that are formed between vendors and customers. Vendors exude professionalism, setting up their stalls every day to offer customers the best products and friendly services; customers, in turn, give vendors their trust and loyalty.
The markets of Barcelona also serve as main players in the city’s history and rich past. Many of today’s markets are housed in historical buildings, architectural gems that have left a mark on the character of the city. That said, most of the marketplaces are currently undergoing a major modernization and remodeling project in order to provide enhanced services and better meet the needs of 21st century sellers.
Among the markets undergoing transformation are La Boqueria, located right on the Ramblas, and commonly referred to as the best market in the world; the Santa Caterina Market, with its fabulous, colorful, wavy roof; the Barceloneta Market, a reflection of seaside city life; and the Sant Antoni Market, boasting a recently renovated Modernist style.
All these sites are synonymous with fresh and local produce. That’s why Barcelona residents are proud of their markets, and think of them as truly their own. The city’s markets offer nothing but quality.
