It’s time for Pride BCN! What began as a celebration to mark International Gay Pride Day is now in its 12th year, and the program is replete with chats, vermouth, and above all, partying. Lots of partying. Like other years, organizers are expecting high attendance rates, partly because Barcelona is among the TOP-5 best places to visit for the LGBTI community, receiving up to one million tourists and travelers annually. Its proximity to Sitges, a same-sex safe haven during the Franco years, and the transformation of the “Gaixample” as the city’s gay-friendly neighborhood have launched the Catalonian capital into the ranks of some of the globe’s most LGBTI-friendly cities, like San Francisco, London, or Berlin. Inclusion, tolerance, respect, and pride are just some of the values exuded by this festival with social, cultural, and purely fun components, on both a national and international level.

The theme of the 2019 event is family. Using the hashtag #wearefamily, Pride BCN recognizes the community as one big family that’s diverse and inclusive enough to welcome everybody. The event also represents the ongoing fight for social and legal justice for LGTBI families, an “entity” that has endured forever, but without widespread support. Rights like marriage or adoption for same-sex couples remains a highly remote concept in many parts of the world. That’s why this year, Pride BCN is making an extra effort to represent the worldwide LGTBI community, reminding us that families come in all shapes in sizes, and the only thing that they have in common is LOVE. And yes, that’s in all caps.

The main event is sure to be the Pride Barcelona march and parade, probably the most extraordinary part of the festivities, and one that’s sure to make headlines. For these special hours, united behind the rainbow flag, one big multifarious and multinational family will make its way proudly from Plaza Espanya to the Moll de la Fusta at the port, where the parade concludes with extra zest to celebrate Pride BCN and everything it stands for.
